For the last seven years — since 2013 — we’ve held the I Annotate conference annually, bringing people together to discuss annotation across many topics, including education, journalism/fact-checking, publishing, research/scholarship, and technology. We’ve accomplished a lot together, from establishing web annotation as a W3C standard in 2017, to sharing dozens of projects and explorations and grappling together with deep issues related to annotation. I Annotate 2019 was one of the best yet, from Gardner Campbell’s keynote to exploring the AGU’s new net-zero headquarters in Washington, DC.

Cancelling I Annotate 2020

Given uncertainties around the spread of the COVID-19 ("corona") virus, we have decided not to hold I Annotate in 2020. Instead, Hypothesis will be sponsoring multiple annotation events at various times in different locations that will offer both face-to-face and remote participation. Given the growing traction we are seeing with annotation in education — more and more institutions are joining AnnotatED, the community for annotation in education — we will also focus 2020 events primarily on annotation in teaching and learning under the AnnotatED banner.

Attend AnnotatED Events FTF or Virtually

Based on our experience in 2019, when we held successful AnnotatED events in Denver, Chicago, Phoenix, online with OLC Live! and virtually throughout the year, we are working to schedule multiple gatherings in 2020. So far our plans include events in April during OLC Innovate in Chicago, IL, and June during Open Apereo in Ann Arbor, MI. We are also working to enable virtual attendance at all these events so we can hold them even if face-to-face gatherings are cancelled, and to plan other annotation gatherings later in the year. Confirm your subscription to be notified if we add more to the schedule and how you can take part in all AnnotatED events in person or online.

Thank you!

We are grateful for all the contributions everyone has made in the I Annotate community over the years, and we hope to be back with the next I Annotate in 2021. We'd love to hear what you think about our plans for 2020 and your suggestions for the future. Meanwhile, you can browse videos, presentation materials, and other proceedings from the last seven years of I Annotate and we hope to see you at an annotation event soon.
